Evil released on Friday the 13th

Controversial zombie-fest unleashed
Tuesday, 15 July 2008, 11:43

RESIDENT EVIL 5 will stumble out of a game store near you dribbling and moaning on Friday the 13th of March next year.

The game, which has been branded racist is some quarters because of a trailer released last year, is sure to be a massive seller, not least because it will generate a whole new heap of rabid nonsense in the tabloids about corrupting the world's youth.

The offending preview, which featured a sequence set in what appeared to be an African village, got the politically correct crowd in a lather because is portrayed a white man in military uniform slaughtering black zombies, (yes we know they're not technically zombies... put the green crayon down).

Game maker Capcom should, of course, have been more sensitive by making sure the African village was populated by a balanced cross-section of of cultural and socio-economic zombie types.

The new game will feature an on-line co-op gameplay system for the first time which sounds like it could be a hoot.

There's supposed to be a new trailer here, but it was borked at the time of writing. Probably been banned because it featured an English rural town mainly populated by white English people. ยต

pathetic

All these anti-racists that go on a rampage over a game that portrays a poor part of an african town/village realistically hurt their cause more than they know. They turn genuine concern about discrimination into a joke by attacking benign stuff like this instead of putting their effort to good use where it's needed, like the attempted genocide of africans in Sudan (darfur) by the Arab leader and his janjawid militia.

Still racist!

When they first shoed off the triler, it showed a white male shooting African zombies, and was immediately labeled as racist.
Now that more information has been released and you see that the second main character is a African female... it will now be decried as promoting black-on-black violence...

Give up, you can't win.

How odd

OK, reading some of the comments on YouTube, I get the feeling that most black gamers are more interested in the title than care about any possible racist intention.

I.E. most people, regardless of colour, accept that people of a certain colour tend to exist in certain parts of the world.

If your game chooses a setting of a small village in Africa, who's population has been turned into zombies, it would be natural to assume that the population would be mostly black. In fact, an isolated village such as this would be an ideal start to a zombie type scenario. Because it's isolated and the people don't have access to weaponry that would help stop the problem.

I think that black people in games are hugely ignored, as are most other races other than whites.

Half-life 2 started to rectify this, my favourite character has been Dr. Eli Vance and the brilliant actor Robert Guillaume voicing Dr. Vance.

Half-life 2, episode 2 really made me love this character and Mr. Guillaume.

Playing a black character holds no problems for me, in Morrowwind and Oblivion I have played the "Redguard" character because that races stats are the ones I want to use. So what if they are black!

Personally, I'd rather that game developers include characters from other races than ignore the fact that they even exist. Sure, you have to be careful not to fall into a stereotype, but when done well, it adds a lot of depth to a game.

I Blame The Bloody Yanks!

They're on to stew us all in a cheesy zombie-fried melting pot and be besotted in imparity! Resident? Yes. Evil? OMGawd No! We all have the supreme right to bare arms below the elbow! They can have me SA80 gympy Koch when they pry they cold dead fingers off the hot smokin barrel. More human than human, zombies come in every color of the jigsaw puzzle. The only good zombie is several kinds of rum with fruit (pine/apple) juice and usually apricot liqueur; but don't forget the little paper umbrella corporation. Such a waist!

Racist?!

Nice, so they immediately say that a white male shooting African zombies is completely racist.

Yet in the previous game a white male shot Hispanic zombies and that was completely fine.

I'm Hispanic and I did not for one second believe that it was racist, these people should get their acts together and stop blaming white people for every racist thing to ever happen in history, Sheesh!!!

Probably not intended

People are sensative to these things. Sometimes we see things that the creators did not think about. I have a culturally diverse heritage having Spanish, Black, and others, but I have an American outlook generally. I have to say I have not been ofended by RE 4 or 5, but my eyes did widen for 4 and even more for 5 because I was able to see right of the bat that the images would disturbe more sensative people. As our games become more visually true to life these things will happen. I was also alarmed when the new female character seemed to be introduced. Perhaps she was planned initally, but the timing seemed to be with the contraversy. She also seems to be mixed, which I can relate to, but one might think that it was not a good idea to have a fully darkskined beautiful character. Everyone has their own personal spin from their experience being negative or positive. It is a thin line artists of mass media have to scribble on.
