Microsoft springs Giant surprise

Free Anti-spyware has a familiar feel
Mon Jan 10 2005, 15:48
USERS WHO have been downloading Vole's latest free anti-spyware offering have been telling the INQ that they were a little surprised at its familiar feel.

One of them told us that he had been testing a very nice bit of free software by Giant and he thought Vole's effort was surprisingly similar.

When he had a look at it he noticed that only a few icons were different and even the text on the screen was the same.

When he looked up Giant's site he was surprised to find that the software had gone and was replaced with the beta Microsoft anti-spyware software.

This is because a few weeks ago Vole bought Giant and announced they were going to offer Giant software under the Microsoft label. Although at the time few expected the software would pass through the paws of Vole almost entirely unchanged.

It seems without having to go through months of hard work and still find their software would have security holes, Vole has cut and pasted Giant code as a beta version of its own.

Another INQ reader has pointed out that Vole had also not only used the free anti-spyware software for PR purposes it was also using it as bait to track down pirated versions of Windows.

Before you can download the super soar away free software you have to undergo an electronic frisking to see if you have pirated Microsoft software on your machine. That's here. Well you might as well get your money's worth of a free offer.
