Whackypedia becomes election matter

Civil servants paid to edit

IN A LAND down under, where politicians tend to be a bit blunter, online comedy encyclopedia Wikipedia editing has become an election matter.

The Aussies are to head to the polls in the next few months and it appears that its politicians are using civil servants to censor their more embarrassing moments from Wackypedia about the ruling regime.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, staff at NSW Premier's Morris Iemma's office have deleted details of a comment he made in front of the media about chief executive of Sydney's Cross City Tunnel being "a f**kwit".

This happened just a week after it was discovered that the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet were caught by the Herald editing Wikipedia articles by removing details of various scandals that might be damaging to the Government.

Now the matter has flared up into the pre-election debate. The Opposition Leader, Kevin Rudd, appeared on Channel 7 this morning to accuse Prime Minister John Howard of hiring public servants to change Wikipedia.

Of course his own staff "make factual changes", Rudd said. But it was wrong to use public service departments to make sure the truth is delivered in accordance to the gospel of Michael Howard.
