Mobile video streaming finds surveillance outlet

So simply your Granny can use it
Friday, 16 November 2007, 00:16

A SYSTEM that offers 'clientless' interactive mobile video using 3G calling is being quietly deployed by Intellistream.

Although the product was developed with entertainment apps in mind, CEO Jim Beagle claims that one in three current inquiries are coming from video surveillance companies.

Beagle also maintained that one of five of all the world's CCTV cameras are located in the UK. Hence there is great interest in a platform that can enable 3G video phones to view CCTV pictures even if the cameras are 20 years old and analogue.

The company argues that its USP is that it requires absolutely no software client to be downloaded onto the phone. Users just make regular –or premium rate – video calls to an ordinary telephone number or a video shortcode.

For interaction, the front end can be configured to have so few options even your Granny could understand it. Other major applications besides surveillance include gambling and dating services - where participants can view and record video clips for potential dates.

Significantly, the system can tie into the existing age verification programs employed by network operators. However, Intellistream played down the system's suitability for adult entertainment sector – as it is unwilling to offend its existing investors.

Usefully there's also a facility to hook into Intellistream's servers using a PC client that is SIP compatible. Beagle expects to announce some major customer wins in the very near future. µ
