Samsung warns DDR2 in short supply

Self-interested or what
Thu Dec 29 2005, 07:47
SAMSUNG Electronics has penned a letter to retailers warning that its shortage of DDR2 chips will continue right through the first quarter of next year.

According to Digitimes, PC OEMs are already screaming that the supply of DDR2s was already running low.

However they should not expect much in the way of respite. DRAM makers are hoping that the tight supply might push the price of DDR2 to the same level for DDR.

Last year DDR2 prices plummeted because there was a huge oversupply. DRAM makers responded by dropping production only to find a surprise amount of interest DDR2-based systems in the business PC market. However, now the shortage is largely in their interest.

Can the two things be possibly related? Surely only the absurdly cynical could suggest such a thing.
