Dell sends low-cost PC to China

Cheap as chopsticks

DELL YESTERDAY announced a cheapo PC is intends to flog in China. The PC starts at a price of 2,600 yuan (about $335), and is aimed at first-time buyers, Dell said.

Dell chief, the man named Michael, said the low-cost tactic could be rolled out to other places poor people live. "We're certainly going to look at other markets where it makes sense to bring our other products," he told reporters as he wrapped up an Asian tour.

How about Luton, Mikey? Or Chicago.

Dell is persevering with its direct model in China, even though consumers in the People's Republic aren't that conversant with it.

And first-time buyers naturally either have to borrow a neighbour's computer or pick up the phone to place an order.

Reuters has more on this here. µ
