MORE WEEKLY news from the wonderful world of consoles.
PS3/PSP
The PSP is once again ruling the roost in Japan after the weekly sales of Sony’s
handheld
jumped
20,000 following the release of a mint green edition of the handheld.
Considering this success, it would not be surprising to see the PSP-phone finally come to light.
Another Sony patent detailing a device with phone, game, camera, music and web-browser functionality has been filed. Don't get too excited though - the patent was filed in 2006.
Further sales of the PS3 might be helped by the US Air Force - it's seeking 300 consoles for "technology assessment".
If that's not enough a group at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth hopes to use a cluster of 16 PS3s to run a simulation of a black hole collision.
Wii/DS
While Sony is dominating Japan with its DS - Nintendo is
ruling
Europe.
Nintendo will once again look upon the Spanish and German software sales charts with satisfaction as its platforms accounted for the top four places in both charts, and 15 of the combined top ten lists as well.
Here's Eurogamer's weekly Virtual Console round-up.
Xbox 360 Microsoft Entertainment and Devices division president Robbie Bach says Xbox 360 still has the edge on PS3 and Wii, largely thanks to Xbox Live.
Bach told Investors.com that Xbox Live, which has more than ten million subscribers, offers an unparalleled online experience and is driving consumers to the platform.
Rumors circulating around the ether suggest that the 20GB hard drive for the Xbox 360 will be phased out for a 60GB model.
Trusted Reviews is confident in its "rock solid" source who said that the switch is going to be made before mid-year, or the end of Microsoft's fiscal year.
And while we're on about the 360 HDD, Rory McGuire, lead game designer on The Bourne Conspiracy, says Microsoft should have included a hard drive as standard with every Xbox 360.
If that's not enough Xbox drive related news, a senior Sony executive has claimed Microsoft is in talks about bringing Blu-ray technology to Xbox 360 - although Microsoft deny the claim.
This would replace the now defunct HD-DVD drive - which is now available in emulator form as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace when you request a token here. µ
No (Ring of) Death Box for me the have to pay to play. Screw MS. My PC and PS3 are free to play online and I will keep it that way. There was only one game the 360 had I wanted and it is coming to the PC, (Mass Effect) Thank EA Games since obviously Bioware was a bitch for MS you taking them over changed that.
Blizzard learned that when they tried to abandon the PC market with Ghost. The backlash was immense.
I remember when 60GB was a big hard drive... way back in 2001. In fact, it was an IBM Deathstar, which never actually gave up the ghost before it was replaced. Are these XBox 360 drives special or something? Because it almost seems they cost so much because a 20GB or 60GB hard drive is a rare commodity these days.
Apparently the little plastic shell that M$ puts the sata drives into are really expensive. As a 20GB sata drive only runs $30-$40, the other $60 must be for that plastic shell and the packaging.

M$ needs to take a cue from sony, and let you use your own HDs if you want to upgrade.
To BB's Post:

The HDD's in 360 are nothing more than a laptop 2.5" HDD in a special casing though I am not sure if the interface is better or on the same level as SATA.

PS3's is a SEAGATE 40, 60 or 80GB Momentus 5,400rpm SATA 2.5" HDD and that can be taken out and upgraded to 500GB and it will not void your warranty. Microsoft charge £120-£130 for there 120GB HDD.

For that price at Overclockers.co.uk you can get a SEAGATE Momentus 200GB 7,200rpm 2.5" SATA HDD for £129 with Del.
am i the only one who sees a problem with this statement
Wii/DS
While Sony is dominating Japan with its DS - Nintendo is ruling Europe.
