AMD TODAY LAUNCHED its newest versions of its workstation graphics accelerator, the ATI FireGL card.

Specifically created for workstation programs such as CAD software and DCC applications, the FireGL graphics cards compete with the Nvidia Quadro Series cards. AMD says the FireGL series has the full range of capability based on the requirements of the end-user.

The FireGL V3600 starts the 2007 series with the industry's first dual-link DVI outputs at the entry level. Designed for simple CAD and DCC datasets and models, the card comes with 256MB of internal memory with 128-bit Ring-bus Memory Architecture. The card includes 120 unified shader processing units and will debut at around $300.

The FireGL V5600 represents the mid-range level with 512MB of internal memory with 128 bit Ring-bus Memory Architecture and 120 unified shader processing units. Debut price should be around $600.

The FireGL V7600 gives ATI its high end model with 512MB of memory with 256 bit Ring-bus Memory Controller, and nearly triples the unified shaders at 320 units. Debut prices should be around $1000.

There are two ultra high end models the FireGL V8600 and the FireGL V8650. Capable of handling massive 2D and 3D textures, datasets, models, and scenes, the V8600 comes with 1GB of memory with 512-bit Ring-bus Memory Architecture and 320 unified shader units. The V8650 claims an industry first with 2GB of internal memory with 512-bit Ring-bus Memory Architecture as well as 320 unified shaders. The V8600 debut price should be around $1900, while the V8650 should be around $2800.

The new family of cards all support Windows Vista, unified drivers, support for dual monitor out via dual DVI connectors, and the ability to run four displays using two graphics accelerators. DirectX 10 is supported as well as applications that use OpenGL 2.1. Also included is a new AutoDetect capability which enables the card to detect what application has been launched. Subsequently, the card loads the appropriate settings. The AutoDetect feature also works on the fly when toggling between two open applications which should make graphics processing a breeze at optimum settings. µ
