SAMSUNG is making big claims for its new mobile processor, claiming to have beaten Intel to develop what it says is the world's fastest mobile processor, with a core speed of 533MHz.

The South Korean company's new ARM9-based S3C2440 is a 0.13-micron process, sporting an ARM920T core with 16 kbyte of both I and D cache, a four-channel DMA controller, an LCD DMA/controller, a camera interface, a JTAG interface and a USB controller.

The chip supports Windows CE, Palm, Symbian and Linux operating systems. It also delivers support for both TFT and STN LCD displays and will be available in 300-, 400-, and 533- MHz speeds running from a 0.13-V core supply.

The processor is due to go into volume production in the fourth quarter of 2003, Samsung says. µ
