HACKS AT Network World are wondering who the bad guys are in this tale of a telco taking 41 non-profit making outfits to the cleaners.

Sprint Nextel has sued the 41 non-profit organisations and the FCC in a bid to get them to renew their Educational Broadband Service licences on time.

The company says the FCC is always granting unofficial grace periods to the 41, mostly schools. This is causing problems for those voluntary groups who try to buy the lapsed spectrum licences only to lose it when the schools do pull their fingers out and fill in the paperwork.

Sprint Nextel insists that it is not trying to nick the school's spectrum for its own purposes. Legally it is not possible.

All it wants is to ensure the rights of those organisations that buy lapsed licenses so that the EBS works as it supposed to work.

However the telco has been accused of being insensitive to the schools who are far too busy these days to make sure that their wireless spectrum licences are up-to-date.
