Walmart restocks $199 Via-powered PC

Comes with Linux and Open Office
Saturday, 24 November 2007, 12:17

RETAIL GIANT Walmart has the $199 Linux-based PC back in stock just in time for the traditional winter solstice gift-giving season.

Walmart brought out the machine earlier this autumn. The initial stock was snapped up fast.

Listed as the Everex TC502 Green PC in Walmart's online catalogue, the machine has a 1.5GHz Via CPU, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, an 80GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive and stereo speakers, but no monitor included. It has G-OS Linux and Open Office loaded.

A reviewer said G-OS Linux with the Enlightenment desktop is attractive and easy to use.

The same box preloaded with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic costs $99 more. And its doesn't have Microsoft's Orifice, of course. ยต

Walmart isn't unique in their offering. The Egg has it for $199 as well.

Vista schmista

I would imagine Vista running on crappy Via cpu with 512MB of ram would be about as slick as a pig with a broken leg and hob nail boots running through supper sticky treacle and quick drying cement. Oh and the pig is dead.
