Firefox 3.0 to clog up the Interweb

Download day
Tuesday, 17 June 2008, 09:53

TODAY IS FIREFOX 3 day. Some 1.5 million people have said they will download the browser when it is launched later, on this page, we guess.

The browser has been through five beta tests and three release candidates, the last of which was to sort of that dodgy Mac OS X.

And the Fireferrets aren't hanging about. They say work has already begun on Firefox 3.1 and an Alpha release could be shown off as early as next month. µ

Well it's the 17th in a lot of countries, so the arguing has begun. Apparently, due to attempts at managing this "event" properly, the 18th is going to be the date most people are downloading on. Cue time-zone related slurs flying over at the official site:

I'll wait for Canonical to release

I'll just wait for it to show up in my Ubuntu update basket, tyvm. Keeps me from having to chase all over the 'net for these "must have" updates.

The official start time is...

...10:00am, Pacific Time, according to the official site.

Or 週三 (Wednesday), as the Chinese call it...

2pm EST and nothing

Their homepage still reads "Firefox 2" 2.0.0.14. So much for their big debut... and whoever posted the link to download FireFox 3 (US), be warned as of 2PM EST it's still linked to 3.0 RC3.

Even if they did still manage to launch it today, with 10 hours to go to set a world record of 5 million downloads, it's highly doubtful they will have the bandwidth to pull it off. How disappointing.

5 Million Downloads Attempted

The 3.0 page came up several times, clicking on the Download Firefox 3.0 timed out several times and then the site reverted back to Firefox 2.0.

They will definitely get the world record in unsuccessful download attempts.
