IPhone gets VoIP

Wi-Fi, not 3G
Tue Aug 12 2008, 09:39

GLOBAL IP Solutions has announced the release of its Voice Engine Mobile software development kit (SDK) for the Apple Iphone.

The new SDK will allow voice over IP (VoIP) developers to create a wide-range of programs, including multi-person chat games and applications for calling regular phone lines.

Emerick Woods, GIPS' Chief Executive Officer, explained that the Iphone's “popularity” and “fast connectivity” made it an ideal platform for the development of applications that incorporated “quality real-time VoIP”.

Unfortunately, consumers expecting to take advantage of their new 3G connection to make cheap VoIP calls will be disappointed. The Voice Engine Mobile SDK is currently based on IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) technology and does not support the unique 3G network. µ
