NV41 to quietly replace 6800 standard

No Geforce 6700 name
Mon Oct 25 2004, 14:06
EVEN THOUGH WE'VE seen some documents that made it very clear that the NV41 will end up with 6700 name, our better informed moles told us that this won't happen.

From the beginning, Nvidia wanted to make some kind of cheaper to produce 6800 standard card and that's what NV41 is all about. There is a slight change of interface as NV41 is PCI Express. It will use exactly the same clock speeds as the 6800 Standard AGP card. NV41 based cards will be branded as Geforce 6800 PCIe and will come as PCIe cards only.

Geforce 6800 standard cards are just too expensive to produce and Nvidia knew that all along. They wanted to have all three solutions out - the 6800 Standard, GT and Ultra. Of course everyone wants a 6800 Ultra card but only a few can actually afford them. Most of people get GTs or Standards.

So NV40 remains Geforce 6800STD AGP while NV41 becomes Geforce 6800STD PCIe.

We have to wait and see wat those NV41 cards that we wrote about here. µ
