GARTNER SAID HP had a clear lead in PC sales over Dell in the last quarter of 2006.

For the second consecutive quarter, HP was the number one vendor and that meant it tied with Dell for the entire year.

HP's worldwide PC shipments rose by 23.9 per cent in the quarter, while Dell shipments fell by 8.7 per cent.

Overall, "price erosion" was the defining theme of the quarter, said Gartner. Here are the figures, with numbers in thousands of units. The figures include all X86 based machines. µ
