Google throws toys out of pram over Belgium

Censors coverage of ruling
Thursday, 21 September 2006, 08:17
SEARCH ENGINE outfit Google is so miffed that a Belgium court will not let it print French language news items, that it is refusing to mention the ruling on its site.

According to Associated Press, Google is refusing to comply with the Belgian court's ruling that required the company to publish the original text of the ruling on its sites.

Google says that requirement was "unnecessary'' and "disproportionate" and it will not publish the ruling even though it faces fines of $634,000 per day.

A spokesGoogle said that the search engine company argued in court that this was disproportionate and now, given all the publicity the case has received, unnecessary. However, Google is removing the Belgian newspapers from its indexes, even though the outfit wants to appeal the ruling.

It is hoping that both aspects of the ruling will be overturned on appeal.
