WoW breaks through eight million mark

Numbers racket
Friday, 12 January 2007, 18:52
BLIZZARD ANNOUNCED THAT WoW, its MMORPG surpassed the eight million player barrier, taking more than 60% or worldwide share in that genre.

If you break out the numbers, North America now has more than two million gamers, Europe counts for 1.5 million and China only has 3.5 million. If we take out the subscription model and put it in mid range, you'll see that the owner of Blizzard, a certain French corporation called Vivendi Universal, is earning close to $50 million a month in the developed countries alone, while a different subscription model in China does not earn as much.

This announcement came just nicely, prior to the launch of an expansion known under the name The Burning Crusade, which goes on sale on midnight between the 15th and 16th of January. We know at least 10 people who will gladly wait in queue in order to get the game, but we wonder will mainstream media cover this phenomenon in a hype fashion of recent console launches. ยต
