AMD to launch AM2 on May 23rd

Boards, chipsets and CPUs listed, ready
Friday, 19 May 2006, 09:32
AMD WILL introduce its new AM2-based, DDR 2 capable chips on Tuesday. Nvidia will also introduce a bunch of its own chipsets that can support these marcthiercures.

It is interesting to note that there are a lot of AM2 boards and CPUs listed and you can probably preorder quite a few of them. The cheapest one that we could find, an MSI K9N Ultra-2F, nForce 570 (dual PC2-800 DDR2) should cost you around €90 while the most expensive one using nForce 590 chipset the MSI K9N Diamond, nForce 590 SLI (dual PC2-800 DDR2) (MS-7226-010) will cost you almost €200.

We expect to see those boards available next week already, just after Tuesday's embargo lifts.

The CPUs have also been listed for some time. For example an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Sockel-AM2 boxed, 2x 2.00GHz, 2x 512kB Cache and should cost you €300 and you can order it today, and get it next week I guess.

The only problem is that there won't be much performance increase from the socket AM2 CPU's and many are expecting miracles.

You can find the CPUs and the new boards here. ยต
