I still need the reassurance of a familiar brand before it's a real story - Tony Maddox, CNN senior VP
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researcher Marilyn Campbell said many child victims of cyber and internet abuse felt they had no place to hide.
She said cyber bullies were posting personal information about the victim on the internet while letting all their peers know the web address via email.
Dr Campbell said the victim had no method of direct retaliation and could not even strike back physically. She said that there is a feeling that everybody in the peer group knows what's going on, whereas in face-to-face bullying it's at least more contained with only a small audience.
More than 13 per cent of students already had fallen victim to cyber-bullying by year eight of school and 25 per cent knew someone who had. More than half of kids thought the phenomenon was on the rise, the study showed.
While traditional bullying often had long-term damaging consequences for its victims, it was possible to surmise that cyber bullying could have even worse consequences, Campbell said.
She said that in the good old days if you were bullied at school you could at least make a run for safety at home. Now the bullies could effectively tail you there. µ
I am a highschool student myself and i would just like to add that face to face bullying does not only have a small audience, when their is a fight everyone is told about it and it usually ends up in the whole school knowing. When the fight is on the whole school runs around after them. So in conclusion face to face bullying is indeed worse then cyber bullying and does atract a bigger audience and makes the victim more terrified.
I am also a high school student and i totally disagree that Cyber bullying is worse than encounter bullying. Fair enough that the victims may feel they have no place to hide, but there are ways to avoid this from happening but from experience i know for a fact more humilliation comes from encounter bullying and esspecially if the word goes round the school and they all come to watch the fight it. thanks >>> maybe do some more research and ask some students point of views..<<<
Like the pervious two comments. I do not agree with this information... As a student in year 10 myself i strongly do not believe Cyber bullying is not as strongly effective than encounter. Encounter is not only between the bully and the victim everyone else also wants to be a part of the issue asweel because it's well... some ecxitment at school so everybody knows in school ground and it is very hummiliating and becomes a bigger impact than cyber bullying. Need to recheck your information and ask kids opinions.
i think that cyber bullying is funny and that you are worng because i think that face to face bullying may be more harmful then cyberbullying
Haha i think that cyberbullying is hilarious.
Well i think that face to face bullying is more harmful because there is people around you which makes it more embarrasing for the person and the person who is bullying you could get some of there friends to gang up on you as well
This information may be slightly true in some various ways...BUT! things have changed through out the years or even months it's amazing how quickly the ways of bullying can tradionally change amongst teens. They are always finding new ways to bring someone else down wether it is they themself have low self esteem or if it's just to bring some excitement into their life which i personally think they must have something wrong with they're way of thinking towards how they act uopn someones differences. I strongly believe this information needs to be updated for things have now changed in the life perspective of youth as i would know being a year 10 student myself. Cyber bullying IS NOT more effective than encounter, AND THAT'S A FACT!
i believe that the information that was stated in this article is false and inaccurate. as a grade 10 student myself, i have been aware of what goes around at high school. i don't believe that cyber bullying has a greater impact on a victim than of traditional face to face bullying. during school, if there is any fights usually the whole school comes running to watch it. obviously this does affect the victim because they can be physically harmed. this also puts more pressure onto them because of the LARGE audience watching.
as everyone has said in the comments, actually ask students in high school about this issue
you are totaly wrong i am a student in year 10 and i used to gett bullied, i will tell you now cyber bulling is harsh and can get outta control but that can be avoided you have many options you can simply change your number or e-mail address but when it comes to face to face bulling if you run it will make the matter worse and if you tell they will only do more to you face to face bulling is the worse bulling effect you can ever face. ( some people just ant strong enough to handle it!!!! )
Alright, first I'd like to make that point that you're all in year 10. Who do you think knows more about this, a man who got an enter score of above 85 and went to University for 4 years, or some kid in year 10? Oh wait, silly me, 4-6 kids in year 10.
Trust me, you're not as intelligent as this man, and he's spent his time studying the effects of both, and knows what both are.
All of you just think that Cyber Bullying is when someone make derogatory comments on your Myspace or email, you're so wrong. Most Cyber Bullying goes on behind your back, with people posting who you've slept with or that you've got a gross mole on your back to everyone in the school and surrounding schools.
Face-to-face bullying, everyone in the school watches you get your shit kicked in, you have a cry, and everyone gets over it in a few days. Now imagine that after you've had your shit kicked in, the guy who did it, and a couple of people who saw it tell people from other schools. It goes on for weeks and eventually you get an email saying for weeks people have been saying you got your shit kicked in, ran crying home and killed small animals in frustration. THAT is cyber bullying, and I know I'd much prefer to have my shit kicked in and have everyone watch.
Also, if you can just "Change your address" to stop cyber bullying, can't you just change your address to stop real bullying?
People are cocks.
