Sony claims 25 megapixel camera breakthrough

Sony make believe
Thu Jan 31 2008, 16:50

SONY SAID IT has developed a CMOS image sensor for digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras that boasts just under 25 megapixel resolution. (Well, 24.81 to be precise)

The new image sensor will enable digital SLR cameras to be designed with higher resolution than any existing commercial product. Ever. Cameras equipped with the sensors will also be able to capture 35mm full-size pictures at 6.3 frames per second.

How did they do it? Our spies say Sony redesigned the sensor's circuitry. Using a planarization technology for the individual picture elements, they placed an analogue/digital converter alongside each column of elements which cuts the noise and allows the camera to read signals quickly without loss of image quality.

Sony will use the new sensor in its own professional-quality cameras and sell it to other camera makers.

Expect mass production as early as this year. ยต

commercial???

what's this excitable 'higher resolution than any existing commercial product. Ever.' business.

There are several medium format cameras with resolutions over 30 Mpixels, plus more med format and a few 35mm with 22 Mpixels (which to all intents and purposes is the same resolution) all on sale for some time.

this is good news, but not groundbreaking.

Pretty bold statements in Sony CMOS

So higher than anything. Ever.
Yes, sounds quite convincing... of course you could have mentioned that Canon has been selling Camera with over 21 Mpixels (5 fps/s I believe) for over an half a year.

So, yes you are correct, Sony will have higher resolution, but the distinction isn't that much. I'll leave the percentage calculations to you to see the difference yourself. Or maybe the number of pixels that Sone gets more to both directions of the image - that's a little harder calculation, but should be ok.

Maybe next time, tone down a little - unless you want to sound like Sony advertisement!

You Better Believe

You Better Believe this one. Except for the fact that the sensor size is smaller I'm current shooting that same tech in a 12.25MP Sony A700 that shoots 5FPS and goes to ISO 6400 with useable output. In fact the photosites on this new product are probably slightly larger allowing for better noise performance.
