THE 21st century version of Algernon Swinburne must be working in Intel's roadmap labs, judging from the lyrical swell that caused us to swoon when we saw its future server plans at the Porcupine, late last week.
Here are some codenames to match Swinburne's wild west. Dempsey, a dual core server chip, will use the Blackford and Blackford VS chipsets with ESB-2, and as well as Intel Active Server, it will use Diamond Peak technology and Sunrise Lake. These technologies are promised for the first quarter of 2006. That's also the timeline for the Paxville dual core processor, and for the Greencreek chipset using ESB-2 as well. Greencreek will have X16 PCI Express graphics support, and give FBD memory capabilities, and better reliability and management features, quoth Intel.
But before we reach the heights of dual core technology, some earlier technology and price cuts are on the way for 2005.
This isn't high faluting stuff, but have been promised for some time and are now close to release.
Cranford, which uses the Twin Castle chipset, is still slated for the first quarter of 2005, and will likely have 1MB of level two cache and be introduced at 3.66GHz. Intel hasn't quite made up its mind what clock speed the Potomac chip, with 8MB of level three cache will launch at, but that's still slated for the second quarter of next year. As the year progresses, Intel will ramp it up.
Next year Intel will also push its 533MHz Pentium M 760 into the blade market, following up on that in the second quarter with the 738.
During 2005, Intel will position first its 660 and then later in the year the X40 as processors for workstations.
As far as pricing goes, the 3.6GHz 800MHz 2MB cache Xeon will launch in mid February for around $850, the 3.4GHz Xeon at $692, the 3.2GHz Xeon at $450, and the 3GHz Xeon at $318. These chips are the functional Xeon equivalents of the Pentium 4 6XX processors, also launched in February, with 2MB of L2 cache. The introduction of these parts will precipitate a fall in prices for the 1MB Xeons, so that the 3.6GHz 1MB will fall to $690, the 3.4GHz to $450, the 3.2GHz to $320, the 3GHz to $255 and the 2.8GHz to $197 on that day.
As for the Xeon MP 3.66GHz with a 666MHz front side bus and 1MB of L2 cache, at launch that will cost $965, and support EM64T. The 3.16GHz with similar features will cost $720 when it's launched.
On the 16th of January, Intel will cut the price of its Itanium 2 1.6GHz 533MHz 3MB chip from the current $1,172 to $1,011.
The Mukilteo chipset using ICH 7, is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2005, as before. This will include Tekoa and Ophir technology. µ
