Fring becomes best mobile IM client

Adds AIM and Yahoo support
Friday, 28 December 2007, 11:52

FRING FIRST rose to fame as a client for adding a Skype capability to leading mobile handsets. Now the addition of two extra IM [Instant Messaging] services – Aim and Yahoo - makes it an IM leader.

So this brings Fring's total of IM clients to eight- the others being Skype, MSN, ICQ, SIP, Google Talk and Twitter.

This improvement brought by the latest version of Fring is almost by mistake. The real intention is to add support for another VoIP service – in this case FWD (otherwise known as Free World Dialup).

FWD basically uses the industry standard SIP protocol so not only can you make calls to other FWD users, you can make VoIP calls toany commercial VoIP service offered by the likes of AQL, for example.

The INQ decided to test the new service out by downloading the latest version of Fring from the FWD web site. The process is relatively simple since FWD sends the correct download URL to you handset via an SMS (text) message.

Existing users should just log on and download the latest version from inside Fring.

The software works with most leading smartphones. There's a list on the FWD site but a good shortcut is to start the Fring registration process.

If your handset make or model doesn't come up, then the phone isn't supported.

The real beauty with Fring is that it can take advantage of a handset's Wi-fi (WLAN) capability as well as connecting over 3G (or GPRS).

At present the application isn't digitally signed so you're taking a small security risk. Curiously Fring appears to be memory hungry on the INQ own Nokia E65 and crashes occasionally.
But on a good day, it does work. µ

I wish it supported Blackberry

I see a huge listing of support for Windows Mobile and some other SMartphones, but a Skype ability on the Blackberry would be excellent

Replacement handset

With fring on my E65, it has all but replaced the home phone handset for me, skype and SIP support combined with the "my key" being re-defined as fring launch, means fring is a lot less crash prone, however as you say, high memory usage and (at least with Wlan) short battery time make it a little less than perfect.

Btw, thanks for the firefox3b2 support in comments :)

Phone number required?

Can't download without providing a phone number? That's lame.
