Dreamhackers go bonkers with 2900 HD

CrossFire leads to 3DMark record

DREAMHACK IS ONE one of the biggest LAN gaming events in the world, with over five thousand avid gamers turning up for a weekend of digital debauchery. This weekend, the team from Nordic Hardware managed to break the 3DMark 05 world record with a pair of Radeon 2900 HD cards in CrossFire.

The final score achieved was 34,126 and this means the Radeon 2900 XT is officially the fastest card in a three year old benchmark, which we're sure will be of some consolation to the AMD execs currently working out just exactly how they're going to make any money this year.

The chaps at Nordic paired up the Radeons with an Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 at 5341MHz, a pair of Corsair 6400C3 memory modules and an ASUS P5W64 WS Pro motherboard for good measure.

For all the criticism aimed at it, 3DMarking does seem to tap into some primeval feeling with us that desires to be bigger, better and faster than the next guy, even in something as mundane as graphics operations. The world is a funny place, and nowhere more so than in Scandinavia, we suspect. ยต
