Intel plots successor to Santa Rosa with Penryn

Notebook Roadmaps Holy Boaz!
Wednesday, 31 January 2007, 16:45
THE SANTA ROSA notebook "platform" won't arrive until the second quarter of this year, but already Intel is plotting a successor to arrive a year down the line.

This, slated for Q2 2008, is dubbed the "Montevina Professional Platform" using the Penryn CPU, Cantiga chipsets and improved ICH9M.

It will also come with "Boaz" GbE digital office but there's no sign of Jachin from the Great Marchitect of the Chip Universe.

Penryn, as we pointed out in another story elsewhere today, has a release date of Q1 2008. The Cantiga chipsets wil come in GM and PM varieties, succeeding the GM965 and the PM965. While Robson 1GB and Robson 512MB are slated for the second quarter of this year, there will be a Robson 2.0 in Q2 of next year as well.

Intel has priced up the notebook CPUs for release in May with the T7700 (2.40GHz) costing $529, the T7500 (2.20GHz) $315, the T7300 (2GHz) $241 and the T7100 (1.8GHz) $209. All but the last of these have 4MB of cache and use 800MHz system buses.

Intel is also readying a Core 2 Extreme CPU for the notebook market which will be a pricy $800 at launch.
