Wii overtakes Xbox 360, becomes No.1

As predicted
Wednesday, 29 August 2007, 12:06
A WHILE AGO, we published a news story about a new site on the intraweb. This site tracks down retail sales, not numbering shipping units. Sadly for Sony, which claims millions and millions of shipped units.

According to the site, here, Nintendo Wii has now overtaken Xbox 360 and is world's console numero uno. In the past week, Wii rose to 10.57 Million consoles sold world-wide, while Xbox 360 also passed 10.5 mark, with 10.51 Million consoles sold.

This was mostly due to the release of Madden 08, where the Xbox 360 version is outselling PS2 version for the very first time. This also marks the turnover point between old-generation and current-generation consoles - you can expect that share of PS2 will now start to decline, as the owners switch to Xbox 360/Wii/PS3.

When it comes to Sony's share of the market, it is obvious that the company is in a dire need for Gran Turismo 5, which looks absolutely brilliant and we can now predict that an additional 2-3 million consoles should be sold when that title comes out. But for now, Sony has the lead in combined PS2/3 market share, but in prostituted "next-gen" term area, PS3 can only hold the candle for Wii and Xbox 360. In hanheld area, DS is nearing the magical number of 50 Million (current stand is: 48.83 million), while PSP should pass the 23M number in next 14 days. µ
