It's the end of the PC as we know it, and I feel fine

Less power to the people

ACCORDING TO Fujitsu-Siemens CTO Josef Reger, virtualisation is the next logical step in the evolution of PC technology.

By creating a virtual space containing only what people require, Siemens-F reckons we can drastically change the amount and type of hardware required, and create more secure and flexible environments in which to work.

Taking us a few years into the future, Herr Reger provided an example of creating a virtual image, containing the operating system, applications and data required for a particular task, and then transporting that image, either via the interweb or memory stick, onto a variety of other devices such as your mobile phone or a TV.

Reger also discussed the massive impact of the increase in power usage in today's consumer electronics.

Commenting on the lack of the lack of energy information provided on today's gadgetry he stressed that more information should be given to consumers such as is already seen on fridges and washing machines. Tying this back into the natural progression of virtualisation, this allows much lower power requirements both from PCs and from data centres and servers, he reckons. ยต
