Big Blue dumps AMD

But hasn't much to dump
Tuesday, 14 August 2001, 09:07
IBM quietly shelved its line of US desktop PCs using AMD processors in May, Cnet reported yesterday.

The news will not shatter AMD because Big Blue, which despite its own involvement in X86 microprocessors has always been a little on the Intel side, only used the chips in a small number of its low end machines.

And more importantly, IBM is far from the force it once was, with its PC strategy in tatters over the last three to four years.

IBM introduced the first PC 20 years ago almost to the day, so it was nice for AMD to be able to hang that trophy on its corporate wall.

It is believed Big Blue is still using some AMD chips in some machines that it sometimes sells somewhere in Europe. µ
