Germany invades hard drives

Schindler has a list
Thursday, 1 November 2007, 09:12

GERMANY'S director of the Interior Ministry's counter-terrorism bureau has defended a plan to secretly scan suspects' hard drives.

Gerhard Schindler has a list of reasons why it is a good idea to plant Trojan viruses into the computers of terror suspects. He said it was important to be able to scan files, photos, diagrams and voice recordings, record every keystroke typed and possibly even turn on webcams and microphones.

Speaking to the LA Times, Schindler said that terrorists are using laptops and computers, and it would have been helpful to track them down with online searches.

He said that the terrorist of today doesn't have an AK-47 under his arm, but he has a laptop on his lap. We assume he means one with Sony batteries.

However Schindler's cunning plans have been greeted with unease in a country with a history of government spying through the era of the Gestapo and communist rule in East Germany.

Sven Lueders, head of the Humanist Union of Berlin, told the Times that Germans fear is that the state can look into their PCs because almost everybody has something on his computer that he doesn't want somebody else to see.

The Chaos Computer Club, which has pledged to find and publicise the first government Trojan, said that snuffling someone's hard drive gives a far more detailed picture than a phone tap.

CCC activist Constanze Kurz said that if she is given your computer for one hour, she will know everything about you. Isn't that the idea?

This is GREAT!

One small step in the fight against terrorism, one giant leap down the road to tyranny.

Hurry!

Quick! Round up and arrest everyone using a laptop!

You kow, it might be easier if this software waws just installed on everyones computer from the start, then the govt can watch you and determine if they think you are a threat. Just pass a law saying that everyone who has a computer needs to have govt monitor software installed on it, so they can see what you are doing at all times...

Lets Fight Terrorism

But wait! who is a terrorist?
I'm a suspecious person, I do not trust anyone... how do I know the good guys from the bad??

Lets put trojans in ALL the HDs!! this way we can simply FIND OUT.

We can then later claim we suspected them of terrorism & made a Mene...mistake.

I'm sure this will work

I'm a casual gamer with nothing to hide and for the record i reformat my harddrive every 2 MONTHS to keep it clean and brisk.
I'm sure a jittery organised crime group in legue with terrorists would have no problem getting a "work" computer which they military erase and reinstall every day clean as a whistle.
We already have criminal organisations using codes they can change on a whim and i'm sure a clean harddrive with external storage of prudent data that can be unlinked after using a peer 2 peer connection would pose no difficulty for this new measure to overcome *rolls eyes.
