Brazil orders Google to name names

Would face daily fines if it doesn't
Mon Sep 04 2006, 14:53
A BRAZILIAN court has ordered Google to provide it with details of a member of its online social group Orkut or face a daily fine of more than $23,254.

The court in São Paulo has told Google to supply the identity of a suspected criminal within 15 days or face the music, which we are assured is not a slow samba.

The attorney general's office had asked for the information as part of an investigation of those using Orkut as a virtual meeting point for racist and pedophile groups.

However Google's Brazilian unit said it could not access such information because this was stored on servers in the US. We will let you know what happens in 15 days.
