Intel to shed another 2,000 jobs

Off with their heads
Wednesday, 17 October 2007, 13:32

CHIP GIANT Intel is to slash its workforce by another 2,000 before the end of the year despite posting strong third quarter results.

The latest round of layoffs will bring to 8,000 the total number of Intel employees shown the door in 2007.

Chipzilla says the move is aimed at reducing costs by $3 billion over a two-year period.

The news came as Intel announced its latest quarterly results, saying demand was better than expected across its businesses and life was generally looking rather rosy.

Not quite so rosy if you just happen to be an Intel employee. ยต

Jobs

Ex-Intel employees with QPI and engineering litho knowledge of 65 and 45nm processes are cordially invited to apply at AMD for a long term contract.

Performance (speed) based contacts are available.

Thanks for your help....

...Now, be gone with you.

They've gotta cut corners to keep their engineers, I'm betting.

Or.......

the 2000 heads are coming form divisions completely unrelated to the microprocessor devisions?

more job cuts!

They get 1.5 million per person by your calculations but the thing is... they are AIMING to save 3 billion which doesnt include other measures.

I'd say most people earned about 100K average that got laid off with perhaps an office or two being closed.

your math is wrong rafael (mine is too probably)

Assuming 2007 is one of the two years, and so far we're at 8k laid off... then there's more to be laid off next year, you get down to less than $150k/year per person, and that includes whatever stock compensation, retirement, health insurance, etc that they get...

but... even being rather conservative, They still probably make 8-10x more than I do. :P

Now let's be fair...

...and count the number of AMD engineers per project versus the number of Intel engineers

More Work Same Pay

Wow, I hate companies that don't care about their employees.
Intel has been KILLING with the Core 2 line, and yet they are axing people by the thousands?
How can you even get rid of 7 thousand people without feeling the loss? Are they going to be spreading the extra work around?
I bet they won't be paying people more for the extra work they are doing either...

Great Place to Work - NOT

I left Intel this year voluntarily for this very reason... I wonder whether they took the "Great Place to Work" off the values list yet...

This is unfortunate as they have invested so much over the years creating a mature U.S. workforce, just to follow short-term vision into cheap labor markets. Other companies are certainly benefiting!

A good place to be made redundant from

Whatever else you can say about Intel the redundancy package is fantastic compared to the usual send-off.

I had the priviledge of being an accidental Intel employee for a couple of years due to being aquired. When Intel eventually did for us (they usually end up killing off what they buy) their 'redeployment' package was worth over a half a year's salary.

(The only snag was the taxman...)

Intel tends to be very hit and miss with its planning. If this redeployment hits engineers then its probably due to sending development overseas -- our work went to Israel and Russia, for example.

Jobs down,Profits Up

It was not to long ago that Intel was talking about axing 10,000 jobs and closing fabs.
Remember ?
45nm fabs produce more parts in fewer fabs
Gotta close those "old" fabs .
What does a fab cost and how long does it take to cover its costs ?
Intel is playing "smoke and mirrors" when Opteron was eating market share that must have killed profits at certain Intel fabs.

Still lots of dead wood..

Intel still has a lot of dead wood remaining from the good old days when promotions were easy.
Too much of my time there was spent fighting bad ideas from incompetents, and dealing with HR who defended unproductive people.
Shedding people carefully is all to the good.

Only if your one of those

Like with any company, the value you bring to the organization will most likely play a role in the final selection. You only need to worry if your unfortunate enough to be in a group that is being cut and or your a slaker. BTW its not 2000(60,000/month), the cuts over the last two years are what they are talking about. (~12000-15000)

Dude that left this year for the reasons listed above

Perhaps you knew your job was coming to an end? Not many people leave because others are getting their heads whacked.
