iPod maker withdraws defamation suit

Waves the white flag
Mon Sep 04 2006, 08:42
APPLE'S supplier of iPods Hongfujin Precision Industry has the white flag in its proposed defamation suit against two Chinese hacks who exposed its breaches in labour laws.

Hongfujin initially sued the two hacks for libel, for millions for accusing it of running what in the West would have amounted to a sweatshop. Last week it announced that it was reducing the money it wanted to a symbolic amount.

However now it seems that the outfit has given up entirely.

Foxconn, which owns Hongfujin issued a saying the two sides had resolved the dispute after apologising to each other "for the disturbances brought to both of them by the lawsuit." Hongfujin said it recognized the right of the media in overseeing corporate behaviour, while the newspaper expressed its recognition of the company's contribution to China's economic development and competitiveness.

Both have apparently agreed to work together to protect workers' rights, it said. More here.
