MSI shows off water-cooled 2900XT

Swede from Down Under gets a peek in Taipei

MSI HELD ITS MSI PC2008 event in Taipei, and engineers from the company got the chance to demonstrate products that may and will be coming to market fairly soon.

The former hardware editor of El Rogista, Lars-Goran went to Taipei and managed to snap a picture of water-cooled Radeon HD 2900XT, which is set for launch this coming Monday. We're uncertain of the timeframe involved, but it was interesting to see ways how MSI modified its cooling system from 8800GTX board to a bit shorter, but still thermally challenging board. You can see the big picture of the card if you click here.

One of interesting features of R600 GPU is that the card can overclock faster as the temperature gets lower (due to small problem of leaking current in the same way as Intel Prescott did). If you are able to keep the GPU in 20-30degC range, huge overclocks are easily doable, and we now that in next couple of weeks, a lot of overclocking scores will be challenged.

Sadly, MSI did not replace the rear-bracket of the card, keeping it a two-slot board. We hope that final retail board will feature a single-slot bracket. ยต
