Gretchen Morgenson rightly notes that analysts seem to think that before they ask a question they have to give a "wet kiss" to the senior management they're talking to before they get on with it.
We can tell you that Paul "Steely" Otellini, Intel's president, gives short thrift to such sycophancy. When we've seen him in action before with both hacks and analysts, we've noticed his eyes roll up with exasperation when faced with this kind of question.
And if you ask a dumb question, he'll go right ahead and sock it to you, just like Andy Grove is more than capable of doing if someone exasperates him.
Gretchen says the most vocal sycophants are from the big Wall Street bulls like Morgan Stanley, CSFB and Citigroup.
Her rather entertaining piece is here. ยต
