POPULAR BEAT ARTIST Stevie Wonder is pushing a GPS system for the blind. Wonder said that the system created a feeling of being independent.

The gear has been made by a Californian company, Sendero, and gives voice directions to its blind users and is a powerful internet-linked computer.

Wonder is a big user of technology and says he wants to spread the message of accessibility for the blind.

He said that by giving the blind such technology, the sighted world would be giving the blind a kind of freedom they cannot even imagine. "It’s a wonderful thing. Life is about creating joy and making things better," he added.

The GPS system fits onto a Braille-interfaced and sound-enabled device that also provides internet and email.

The device comes with a "a look around mode" that announces to users what is around, without the need to enter commands. µ
