Supermicro wiggles its chassis

CES 2008 First in a long line
Saturday, 5 January 2008, 22:53

SUPERMICRO HAS a new chassis that may not look like much, but you will be seeing a lot of it in the near future. It is called Whisper-Quiet, a much better name for it than Grating-Screech, the other name our sources said was under consideration.

The new chassis is designed more as an integrated PSU and cooling system, and it runs at 28db idle, going up from there. The new 865W PSU is 80+per cent efficient and sports up to four PCIe GPU power plugs. If you can't tell, it is aimed at workstations.

The first two models are the SC7045-C3 and -CT, one being standalone, the other rackmount. There are two San Clemente based mobos that fit, so it will slide in at the low end of Intel 2S boxes.

This is the first of many in the new line, look for everything from high to low end, Intel to AMD to take up the form factor and PSUs. Just about every tier two OEM will be shipping these in the coming year, so you will run into them sooner or later. ยต
