Amazon.com intros 'lower price alerts' shock

Newton's revenge: what goes up, comes down
Saturday, 30 April 2005, 11:02
WE REPORTED some time ago about the strange and sudden "price hike alerts" displayed on Amazon.com carts (see Strange price hikes hitting my Amazon.com shopping cart). We also reported the Corporation's official reply (see Amazon.com prices only 'guaranteed for one hour' shock). Well, it seems that Amazon.com can't escape the laws of physics, or should I say, market forces and the "bad image backlash".

The online retail giant has recently started showing not only the now-usual "price increase" alerts on its online shopping cart, but also -and this is new as I've never seen such alerts before last week- "Price reduction" alerts. It feels good to know that "prices can also go down, instead of just up" at the popular retail site, and that when there's a price reduction it is now boldly noted on the cart.

The new "Price Reduction" alerts look like this:

Amazon.com price reduction alerts: Hooray for Gravity!

We tried to INQuire about this from both Amazon.com's PR department and asked Isaac Newton, the great English alchemist -apparently wrongly dubbed by some folks the inventor of gravity, but none of them were available for comment at 3:50 in the morning when we wrote this report.ยต
