LENOVO HAS TAKEN the wraps off a mammoth machine that it doesn't even try and call a laptop, but rather a 'mobile workstation'.
The new ThinkPad W700 is a 17-inch model that has space for an Intel quad core CPU, one of Nvidia's new Quadro FX Cuda based GPUs, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory (with an additional 2GB of Intel Turbo Memory) and optional dual hard drives in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 setup.
There will be also be a plethora of other optional bells and whistles like a Blu-Ray burner, card reader, Wi-Fi and ultra wide band support.
For the security minded, there is an optional fingerprint reader, smartcard reader and hard drives can be fully encrypted.
The uber-machine will be available in October with models starting at an eye watering £2500 excluding VAT. Models supporting WiMax will be available later this year.
The lighter wallet will be offset by the device itself which has a starting weight of 2.63kgs, but will probably push well over three by the time you've added the power adaptor and a few extra bits and bobs. µ
Why does a "server" need a fancy GPU?
The main market for the W700 are professional (and wannabe) photographers.

It has an optional wide-gamut LCD with built-in calibration hardware, and an optional built-in Wacom tablet.

This is *the* pro artisan laptop, bar none.

It's nothing short of the fastest image/video wrangling laptop you can buy.

P.S. Any chance someone at the InqBlot could get the captcha working on IE7 with scripting turned off? It asks for a code, but doesn't display the image...
