Wooden USBs offer root and branch answer

Off the wall and out of Africa
Mon Jul 17 2006, 08:13
AN OUTFIT in the small West African country of Sao Tome e Principe has created a new industry for itself making handcrafted wooden USB drives.

The country, which only has a population of 150,000, has managed to get finacial backing from the Portuguese to form an outfit called SEED 2006.

Under the cunning plan, hatched by designer Pedro Alegria, local wood carvers will make the casings and place the USB flash cards inside them.

Not only will this keep traditional craft skills alive, but it will feed crafts people's families. There are some pictures here. ยต
