Changes coming soon at Nokia

Big company plans
Tuesday, 4 November 2008, 12:20

LARGE AND SMALL changes are afoot at Nokia – the mobile device giant today announces cuts, expansion and future plans for the company.

First up for change is the Markets unit which will "strengthen the customer interface, ensure resources are well allocated to meet the business needs and de-layer the organisation." Nokia estimates that approximately 450 employees in this unit will be affected by the planned changes.

Also up for refurbishment is the Nokia Research Center (NRC) which plans to sharpen its focus on fewer yet stronger research areas – this change is estimated to impact around 130 employees globally.

Nokia also plans to close its Turku site in Finland and relocate those activities predominantly to Salo, also in Finland. All existing employees will be offered the option to switch sites

Juha Äkräs, Senior Vice President of Human Resources says, "Today's changes are part of Nokia's constant renewal where it is important to be close to our customers and ensure that our people are able to focus on the key business priorities.”

In order to keep everyone sweet, Nokia hopes to find work within the company for all existing employees.

Nokia has also unveiled today a range of kit that makes better use of the Internet with an estimated retail price of 25 to 90 euros.

Several models are expected to begin shipping this year while the company’s suite of Internet services for emerging markets will be available of next.

Robert Andersson, Executive Vice President of Nokia says, "The mobile device and the Internet are a powerful combination in connecting people with each other, accessing information, news, entertainment and sharing.

'By introducing products and services that are affordable, relevant and easy-to-use, we believe Nokia can fuel the growth of the Internet in emerging markets through mobility."

The first services the mobile giant will offer will focus on email, agriculture and education, areas which according to Nokia research show the strongest demand in emerging markets.

According to the plans, the changes to the company will begin in January 2009. Talks with local employees have began today. µ

Its about time

Its about time Nokia put some more resources into the client, having had problems with nokia before i know what it can be like when they shaft there customers for support. have a look at their own forums and you will see what i mean.
I guess its the apple iphone we have to thank for forcing nokia to get of there ass and come up with some fresh innovative ideas to continue to be competitive, nokia has been a sleeping giant for far to long they haven't really been pushed to come up with anything better than they currently have.

hopefully this will make a difference and we should see some improvements!
