Google does Linux Desktop

Beta max
Thursday, 28 June 2007, 11:19
GOOGLE HAS released its native Linux, Google Desktop for Linux.

Like the OS X and Windows versions, the software allows users to search for text inside documents, email messages and Gmail accounts. The Linux version is not yet equipped with the sidebar and gadgets that are available in these other versions, however.

A spokesGoogle said these would "probably" be added in the future.

The new version is available in both RPM and a DEB distribution packages, supporting Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Mandriva, Ubuntu 6.10, SuSE 10.1 and Red Hat 5. It should also work on other distros that have glibc 2.3.2+ and gtk+ 2.2.0+ installed.

Like most Google software the Linux Desktop is in beta form, so that you can't moan too much when it breaks. ยต
