THE MAN who brought us Microsoft Office blasted off in orbit over the weekend becoming the fifth space tourist.

Charles Simonyi made his fortune as the top Vole in application software group, oversaw the creation of Microsoft's flagship office software. Having made himself a billionaire he quit Vole to form his own outfit called Intentional Software.

Worth about a billion dollars, Simonyi and two Russian cosmonauts blasted into orbit on Saturday aboard a Russian spaceship. The goal of the mission was a trip to the International Space Station (ISS).

Simonyi paid $US25 million for the 12-day trip.

He is a close chum of lifestyle guru and former lag Martha Stewart. She was there to wave him off.
