Graphics fixes rushed out for Bioshock demo

Patch up your cards, folks
Tuesday, 21 August 2007, 11:12
THE NEW PC DEMO for game of the year contender Bioshock is out, and both Nvidians and MAD-hatters are going to have to patch up their systems for this one.

Nvidia has released a new beta driver, numbered 163.44, to achieve full compatibility. The driver is for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of both Windows Vista and XP. The headline fix is "improved compatibility for Bioshock," as well as some HD video post-processing effects. The driver is SLI-compatible, which is a good thing, since Bioshock is guaranteed to make your system crawl.

Meanwhile, AMD has released a new hotfix for its driver, numbered 737-29041, which fixes display corruption and stuttering in the game, and which is also available for both Vista and XP.

The ATI hotfix is here and the new Nvidia driver is here.

Bioshock has been winning rave reviews around the wibble for its combination of outstanding storytelling, spectacular graphics and compelling gameplay - according to its Whackypedia article, it's averaging 97% from reviews, with many top publications giving it 10/10.

The official PC requirements beg for a minimum of a DX9.0c graphics card with 128MB of RAM, as well as 1GB of RAM, plus 8GB of HDD space. The engine is based on the Unreal Engine 3, which has been modified pretty heavily, and is coded to use DX10 graphics cards for extra pizazz.

The game is due out August 21 / 24 depending on where you live. You can grab the demo itself right here and watch your system scream. ยต

Rave reviews?

I found the statement " it's averaging 97% from reviews, with many top publications giving it 10/10" interesting. Obviously all of those ratings didn't come from anyone that actually tried to install it. I've been doing computer and network support for 20+ years and after 24 hours of pure frustration I've given up. You can only install it a small number of times on your computer. Yup, that's right - after that you are out of luck. You can ONLY install it from the DVD if you have an internet connection (better be a darn fast one). Oh, did I mention that you actually have to go modify yoru internet explorer and add proxy settings? yeah, that's right, The download installation uses internet explorers proxy settings to contact the mothership ... but you are going to have to go find a good proxy IP and usable port and then plug that info in yourself. If you don't know what a proxy connection is then well I guess this will be an educational experience for you. The list of frustrations goes on and on. i have a top-end system that is 2 months old WITH the hardware that they listed in their recommended requirements. Not good enough. expect to go searching for updated drivers and you will also have have to load beta drivers. Even then, that just gets you another 10 seconds into the intro before the game crashes to desktop again. it's not my software - I have Office installed, that's it. Rave reviews? yeah, maybe by their marketing department ... do yourself a favor and wait 5-10 years until they have all the issues worked out.
