Apple fixes some Leopard Time Machine bugs

But it is still rotten, claim users
Wednesday, 7 November 2007, 09:25

FRUIT-THEMED entertainment gadget maker Apple has released work arounds for two bugs that have been causing headaches for the users of its new operating system Leopard.

According to PC World, Apple has released two work arounds for its Time Machine back-up system.

Scores of users flooded the Apple site complaining that the Time Machine stalled after saving as little as 10GB or as much as 90 per cent of the entire data set.

Apple thinks that the the fault is in the external drive's partitioning and the external disk needs to be wiped so that it is supported by Time Machine.

Apple also says that the reason that users sometimes cannot see their backups, even though Time Machine has successfully copied data, was due to them using non-alphanumeric characters in the computer's name.

Apple claims this will fix Time Machine's woes, but Mac users are still reporting more problems on Apple's support forums. Users have dared to claim that Time Machine's problems are beyond the two problems Apple addressed.

Time Machine has been reported as corrupting drives, faltering before it finishes restoring a backup and the wiping files from backups before the external drive has been filled.

One Apple fan boy came to the shocking conclusion that the software actually did not work, even though Saint Steve of Cappuccino had blessed it and said it was good.

In fact it is causing such a crisis of faith amongst Apple fans that they are starting to come up with conspiracy theories that suggest that the disk maker LaCie, who supply most of Apple's hard drive must be at fault. ยต

Brilliant

Ah, Apple. A more pretentious company there could never be.

Maybe if they'd spent less time on the absurd interface and more time on the underlying functionality everything would work correctly.

Kinda like everything they make, really.

Nuts!

If there is actually a fault in SJ's software (which can be theorized, but it's just academic speculation - cannot happen in real world) or it really doesn't work (another out-of-this-world theory, of course.... just nuclear physicists' blabber) then you cannot blame no-one but the Vole: they must have sneaked some of their employees in Steve's organization just to plant bugs.
Another volish attempt to discredit the holy fruit.....

Am I missing something?

I think the most troubling aspect of this is that, unless I'm missing something really impressive, Apple is mucking up a very simple task. Maybe it's so simple that they didn't bother to test at all?

Oh grow up

Is this really a news story? A small proportion of the 2 million plus Leopard users report problems with part of the OS that by its very nature relies on third-party hardware. Stop the presses - the Pullitzer beckons!

Dear Andrea...

I hope that was satire ;)

Leopard rocks

Well, this is the "Inquirer" after all, so getting anything even relatively non biased against Apple here is not going to happen, but in the real world, Leopard is gathering accolades, and the vast majority of users are thrilled with the latest release of OS X. Computerworld today summised that Leopard trounces Vista. Oh well, go back to your Fox News version of things.

Hard linked directories

They changed the way hard links work, to reduce the inodes used in the incremental backup. Then they must have hacked rsync as well, because it expects proper hard links instead of these dangerous additions.

I wrote a similar system in a few days, but not just for a single machine, and the user interface was just the normal file browser, which makes sense because we're browsing files... right? Not Star Wars credits. Oh yeah -- multi-platform as well. Oh yeah -- it didn't break.

Satire? Hella yes.

Andrea's comment was quite definitely satire. Amusing satire, too. She could easily pass herself off as a pompous Mac user.

Re: Oh Grow Up

"relies on third party hardware"

As opposed to the Mac brand HDD's built in? Or perhaps you meant the Mac brand controller chip? Mac cables? Mac sticker?

Thats the problem then... No sticker. Somebody call Kinkos.

wow! scores?!

Wow.That's terrible! Let's see... 2 million copies sold, and (wait for it) "scores" (that's 20, btw) of complaints. Horrible... how many "scores" 5? 10? Ten would be, 200. OHMYGAWD! That's 1/100 of 1%; that a crushing complaint rate of .01.

Yep: really must be crap.

Really: haven't you folks anything better to do?

just change the name

Why bother attempting to alter the code? Just rename the feature to *iShredder*.

Re: Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing the fact that if 20 ppl managed to complain on the fruit-forums about this time machine bug then there must be 10000 user out there who simply arent capable to find their way to the forums. Not surprising though, after all Macs are targeted at people who can't turn their computer on, who don't get technology and who likes shiny-out-of-the-box things on their desks.

La Cie

The article seems to state that La Cie actually makes the physical hard drives (or disks) in Apples and their external drives. La Cie simply makes fancy cases for these drives that are Mac-compatible. They put in Seagates and Western Digital drives within those fancy cases.

Brilliant part 2!

Let's see, given the negative comments about apple, I guess most of you have never used one, so your comments are worthless rambling. Everyone I have ever meet, has loved apple with it's power, ease of use, and stability once they have actually used one. Hum, I think even the inquirer wrote an article about how they enjoyed leopard. I am a PC Tech and am very efficient with both platforms and I have to say, OS X trounces Windows hands down. What does windows have, just games and spyware/viruses. Yeah, Vista is perfect, that's why no IT department in their right mind will touch it. It's so great that PC makers have to offer upgrades to XP professional. Come on get a clue, read some real reviews and hey here's an idea, try using a mac. You can't comment effectively on something if you don't have a clue about it.

TM unusable with Dell widescreen monitors!

Another little snippet: try to use Time Machine on a PowerMac with any 1920x1200 monitor (Dell's excellent 24" units, for instance), and you'll have a nasty shock. The screen's corrupted, and TM is just about useless. You can only use it if you change resolution.

Nice one, Steve. Does no-one at Cupertino use 1920x1200 monitors?

Indexing

I suspect many of the problems are related to the indexing system which many features are now reliant on.

I have had some serious problems with the indexing of the main drive and time machines drive. It regularly reindexes from scratch. On two occasions it failed to start up at all. I could login but nothing but the desktop and the beach-ball of death. I got the sense there were goings on with the drive heads, but nothing to intense; so if it was indexing it wasn't too serious about getting it done before the week was out. Once I left it over night in hopes it was just reindexing slowly, with no progress when I got up in the morning. Nothing I did would fix it. For me most of the "badness" seems to be followed by a reindex of either or both drives.

Most of my issues are related to this and they seem to have started after the 10.5.1 update. Although since the last reinstall of OS it seems to be ok for now.

TM, Mini, Dell

I have a Mac Mini 1.42ghz and a Dell 24" monitor. Does the same thing as mentioned above even in 10.5.4. I have to lower the resolution to get it to work correctly. GARBAGE
