Thanks very much.

Mark,
What a touching STORY................................I really feel quite sorry for people like you whom can not even correctly configure your own system...............really now, if you have that much trouble with such a simplistic O/S, perhaps you would be better served by hiring someone whom knows how since by your own detail, you do not......... ;-)

Powertoys for XP delayed
You need to download powertoys for windows xp. Unfortunately it is not available at the moment as it says here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

I have attached the file for you instead. Once it is installed, go and run tweakui, go to the explorer option and tick "use classic search in explorer"

Thats it, no more doggy :-)

Tweak XP
Hi Mike... :) Thought I'd let you know that I got a laugh from your article about the annoying Microsoft search dog.

You should take a look at Tweakxp ... There you will find many nice little tricks to fine tune XP out of it's little annoyances (ex: worthless msn messenger).

Thanks for all the good articles,

Get rid of dog - easy way
Hi Mike

I think you got the wrong end of the stick there on a few points:

· You can turn off the bloody dog, but personally, I like it. With the example menu on the article, click on 'Change preferences'. On the next screen, click ' Without an animated character' and Faithful goes away.

· Applications crash and PC reboots repeatedly: leave it swiched off then. But really, you probably have faulty hardware. When I upgraded from Win 98 to XP Pro (clean install) the machine would reboot spontaneously within 5 minutes. Turned out to be a faulty processor (AMD K6-333). It had previously been quite stable with 98.

· Product activation works over the internet, without a hitch. I'm not sure why you used the phone. And I hate it too.

On product activation. With all the discussion about this, no-one seems to have brought up the point about what happens when Microsoft no longer wants to support the product: you will be unable to activate it. So should you want to install it in a few years' time on your old PC, you're stuffed. And you paid good money for it. I think this should be brought up, what do you think?

Thanks for many a good read,

Mikey

Get rid of dog forever - the tricky way
Mike

by now I am sure you have received countless emails detailing how to rid youself of the pesky little dog. However.... In the March edition of Maximum PC, page 14, Dick Matthews explains how.

"Start regedit, then browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerCabinetState and create a new String Value called Use Search Asst. Then set the value of that key to No. This will revert your system search tool to the Windows 2000 default, suitable for people who know that a filesystem is more than a bunch of folder icons.

Once you have evicted the search dog you can de-idiot-proof your XP machine a little more by getting rid of all those annoying popup balloon tips. From inside Regedit browse t HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced and create a DWORD key named EnableBalloon Tips. Set the value to 0. Once you reboot, all the helpful WinXP balloon popups will be gone. "

Hope this solves your problem. He makes the warning that if you type something wrong , or mash the delete key at the wrong time, you could possibly destroy your Windows install, but you already know this.

Get rid of dog - use spell checker

How do you get "ride" of the little dog? Maybe you SHOULD use your spell and grammar checkers?!
