GDDR4 coming to 2900XT, apparently

When memory attacks

RUMOURS REACH US from Old Taipei to insinuate that 1GB GDDR4 versions of the Radeon 2900 XT may tip up at Computex.

DAAMIT was experimenting with 1GB of the theoretically-faster memory spec on the 2900 XTX, but couldn't make it work with the 65nm XTX chip, with the prototype cards ending up with slower performance than the 512MB GDDR3 XT.

The card will be a firm nine inches, not the 12-inch monstrosity that had been feared.

The jury is still out on whether there is much need for 1GB cards in the consumer space. While games like Unreal Tournament 3 and Quake Wars feature some high detail textures, one can't help wondering if DAAMIT should concentrate on fixing the core marchitecture, rather than just plonking more memory on. µ
