GPLv3 gets left on the shelf

Spurned like a rabid Penguin

OPEN SAUCE developers are staying away from the latest GPLv3 licence in droves.

Quoting Evans Data figures, Business Wire claims that only six per cent of Open Sorcerers are using the new GPLv3 licence.

Two-thirds say they will not be adopting GPLv3 anytime in the next year, and just under half say they will never touch it with a barge pole.

GPLv3 is not the flavour of the month because it restricts what you can do with programs.

John Andrews, President and CEO of Evans Data said that developers were confused and divided about those restrictions, with fairly equal numbers agreeing with the restrictions, disagreeing with them, or thinking they will be unenforceable.

Sheep

This is a sheepish reaction which is just caused by Linus Torvalds' refusal to adopt the new license.

It doesn't restrict you any more than GPLv2 at all: only companies that want to create "patent minefields" through free software or that want to ride on open source's success but not give anything back by using it in their hardware and not providing the source code (the ONLY requirement that GPLv3 adds in this instance) are at a "disadvantage". But for people who are against software patents and other such nonsense, this new license is a god-send.

Methinks that they are wrong

The Palamida Software website is tracking adoption of GPL V3 here:

http://gpl3.palamida.com:8080/index.jsp

From the numbers that they show it looks like adoption is going well. I think that Evans Data may have messed up their figures.
