Nokia off the hook on fire charge

Suspect phone did not start San Franciscan blaze
Fri Jan 19 2007, 11:59
FIRE INVESTIGATORS have backed off from initial suggestions that a mobile phone combusted and started a fire that left a man with third-degree burns.

In Vallejo, San Francisco, Luis Picaso, 59, fell asleep on a chair and was awoken by flames coming from his right pocket. Smoking materials were not found, leading to experts suspecting the cause as the Nokia 2125i.

However, Nokia engineers were able to disprove the theory by the simple expedient of switching on the unit to show it still worked and therefore could not have shorted, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Perhaps the fire experts had been reading too many stories about combustible electronics. And perhaps Nokia will borrow the old Timex line and suggest this proves that its phones take a licking and keep on ticking. Or something like that. µ
