Pegasus mail crashes

Cash dried up
Tuesday, 9 January 2007, 08:23
THE FREEWARE, proprietary, Pegasus Mail client has been killed off by its developer and maintainer David Harris.

Pegasus has a long history. It was originally released in 1990 for MS-DOS and saw service in Windows, Apple computers. In the days of Novell NetWare it was often the mail client.

It was popular because it was unaffected by viruses geared for Microsoft Outlook and Express. It also pioneered many of the features which are seen in other email clients such as multiple POP3 access. Sales dropped when the Vole started issuing Outlook Express for free and now it seems that the money has dried up.

On the Pegagus site, Harris said that ongoing difficulties with funding have forced the death of the software. He said that sites which had current support subscriptions will be fully supported until their subscriptions expire.

Harris added that if sponsors could be found to provide modest ongoing funding, he would be happy to continue developing the program and would even consider opening the source. ยต
