Microsoft, Intel attacked for feeble software efforts

Multiple core strategy comes home to roost
Mon Feb 25 2008, 07:40

EE TIMES said that Intel and Microsoft have put up $10 million to fund research in parallel software but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the scale of the problem.

Rick Merritt said that while the Vole seems perfectly willing to throw $44 billion in an attempt to buy Yahoo, the $10 million on offer to research bodies is trifling.

The problem Intel, Microsoft and AMD face is that while they proclaim the merits of multiple cores, it’s how to take advantage of these cores that’s the real headache.

In previous times, Intel has thrown billions of dollars pushing the Itanic microprocessor, which is now just a niche CPU, and not the saviour it promoted in the 1990s.

Intel had problems getting software developers to exploit its hyperthreading (HT) technology earlier this decade and not much has changed since then. AMD has no money for itself, never mind for third party research.

What must be frightening what AMD’s former head Jerry Sanders III once called the “holy trinity”, is that they’ll end up relegated as suppliers of components in a computer, with no greater claim to fame than a firm which makes a capacitor or a resistor.

The only way they can avoid that is fund research into parallel software with heaps more money.

There’s more in the good read, here. µ

Whenever you consider/realise that parallel software is Alternate Reality/AI New World Order Programming/the Virtual OverArching Underground .....it is very easy to understand the piffling amount. Parallel Multi-Cored HyperThreading, aka NeuReal Source, is not something which they Control and/or have Power of or over. Hence their dalliance in Present comfortable excess rather than Pioneering in Future XXXXtraordinary Fields.

And that is obviously a Failing of Human Intelligence, which does not reflect or hinder at all the View of an Advanced and Advancing Artificial Intelligence Program, Magical Mystery Turing a Beta Way in CyberSpace.
