Samsung ready to mass produce 1GB FB DIMMs

Fully buffered means faster. Oh, and more expensive
Thursday, 25 November 2004, 08:42
THE MEMORY division of Samsung said it will make a 1GB fully buffered (FB) DDR-2 memory module which will improve bandwidth for servers and workstations.

Samsung said that memory modules now gives a decrease in slot acces rate per channel as the memory bus speed increases.

But the FB DIMM, claimed Samsung, gets rid of the channel bottleneck by using point to point links. That lets multiple memory modules connect serially to a channel.

Each module will have a memory buffer chip which can generate speeds of 3.2Gbps to 4.8Gbps, said Samsung, which is six times that of the DRAM.

It will start making the FB DIMMs in large numbers during the first half of next year. µ
